AROUND THE SHIELD — In April, the Los Angeles Rams used a fifth-round pick to select BYU wide receiver Puka Nacua with the No. 177 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

Are there 176 players better than Nacua? Early results suggest not.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound receiver set an NFL rookie record Sunday in the Rams' 30-23 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, catching 15 passes for 147 yards to lead all receivers.

That's the most catches by a rookie in a single game in NFL history, surpassing the previous record of 14 held jointly by Washington's Roy Helu, Pittsburgh's Najee Harris and Giants running back Saquon Barkley.

But that wasn't the only record Nacua broke.

With back-to-back 100-yard receiving games, Nacua set an NFL record for most receptions by a rookie in their first two games of the season. The former Orem High star who played at Washington before transferring home to play with his older brother Samson at BYU is the first player in NFL history with 10 receptions and 100 yards receiving in each of his first two pro games.

"He's a stud," Rams coach Sean McVay said of Nacua. "The game makes sense to him, physically and mentally. Tough. He works really hard. … He's very inquisitive, he asks a lot of questions, and he has great guys to lean on."

Added Nacua to reporters in the Rams' locker room: "I just think about the veteran guys that have invested time in me, and I've invested time in myself. This is a dream come true for me to be here in the National Football League, and I try to make sure I live up to that standard every day."

Nacua was targeted 20 times by Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, who completed 34-of-55 passes for 307 yards and a touchdown

But the Niners' defense was too good, intercepting Stafford twice with a defensive effort that included a sack from former BYU standout Fred Warner.

Warner, a two-time Pro Bowl selection and first-team All-Pro linebacker, wasn't to be outdone by a fellow BYU alum. He finished with 11 tackles, including nine solo stops, in the 49ers' win.

But Nacua showed he's here to stay in the league and with the Rams, who will be without Cooper Kupp after the standout wide receiver was placed on injured reserve for at least the first four weeks of the season. Nacua's 25 receptions through two games shattered the previous NFL rookie record of 19 set by San Francisco's Earl Cooper in 1980.

"He's the epitome of what we want to be as Rams," McVay said of Nacua. "I love Puka Nacua, and I was really pleased with him today."

Here are a few other breakout performances from former local high school and college football players in Week 2 of the 2023 NFL regular season:
