PROVO — The Utah County Attorney's Office announced Friday they are investigating the FBI shooting that resulted in the death of a Provo man on Aug. 9.

The shooting occurred about 6 a.m. that day, when FBI agents were attempting to serve an arrest warrant at the residence of Craig Robertson. The FBI said Robertson pointed a gun at the agents as they tried to take him into custody and he was shot and killed in the process.

An arrest warrant for Robertson claims he had been making threats on social media against President Joe Biden, who arrived in Utah just 10 hours after the shooting.

One such social media post from the day before the shooting reads: "Perhaps Utah will become famous this week as the place a sniper took out Biden the Marxist."

"Consistent with the requirements of state law, the Utah County Attorney's Office is investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting. That investigation includes a review of evidence in the FBI's possession as well as evidence independently gathered by the county attorney's investigative team," said Deputy Utah County Attorney Timothy Taylor in a statement.

Once the investigation is complete and evidence is examined, the Utah County Attorney will decide whether the shooting was justified. Utah law states the findings and analysis from the county attorney must be published within 180 days of the investigation's completion.

Sen. Mike Lee during a town hall in Lehi Wednesday said the FBI shooting was "highly unusual" and warrants "serious investigation."

"I don't think any of us can claim to know enough facts about that investigation, about what happened there, to know. An investigation will have to happen," Lee said. "Obviously, it's of deep concern any time law enforcement acts in a way that results in the taking of a human life. People have got to be held accountable and we shouldn't expect anything less."
