OGDEN — A Roy man is facing 12 charges relating to a January car crash that killed a 13-year-old passenger and injured five others.
Cornelius Joseph Flores, 31, was booked into the Weber County Jail with no chance of bail Saturday after 2nd District Judge Craig Hall issued a warrant for his arrest Friday.
On Jan. 14, Flores drove with six minors in his car, even though his request for a new driver's license had been denied, according to charging documents. He drove a 2004 Cadillac Escalade owned by Crystal Sanchez, with her permission, police say. Three of the minors in the car, along with Flores, were not wearing seat belts, the charges state.
It was about 5:45 p.m. and Flores was westbound on 31st Street in Ogden when he changed lanes and accelerated to approximately 80 mph in a 45 mph zone, approaching the northbound I-15 ramp, according to charging documents.
The driver of a Honda Pilot told police he believed Flores was turning onto the ramp, so he began to turn into one of two lanes onto the I-15 on-ramp. Flores went straight, however, and the left front tire of the Escalade hit the right front of the Pilot, charges state.
The Escalade flipped to the right, landing on the side of the road. Flores and his front passenger, Kingston Richard Sanchez, 13, were ejected. Sanchez was pronounced dead at the scene, a police booking affidavit states. Four of the five other occupants also received serious injuries, as did the front passenger of the Pilot, police said.
Electronic data from the Escalade shows the car reached a peak of 80 mph just three seconds before impact, according to the affidavit.
Kingston was the son of Crystal Sanchez, whose car Flores was driving. Kingston's obituary calls Flores a "bonus dad."
At the hospital, Flores tested positive for cocaine, THC and a had a blood-alcohol content of 0.108%, about twice the legal limit, according to the charges.
Flores was charged with negligently operating a vehicle resulting in death, a second-degree felony; two counts of negligently operating a vehicle resulting in serious injury, a third-degree felony; three counts of negligently operating a vehicle resulting in injury, plus DUI with a passenger younger than 16 years old, class A misdemeanors; as well as driving on a denied license, a class C misdemeanor.
Flores has also been charged with four infractions: three counts of failure to secure a seat belt for a child 8-16 years old, and speeding.
Flores is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 23.
