Man recovers in hospital after head-on collision with brother in Iron County

CEDAR CITY — One man remains in recovery following a head-on collision involving two brothers in Iron County earlier this week.

Caleb Lofgran had been working on a construction project in Beryl Junction, building several "exotic vacation rental units," his father Randy Lofgran said in a written statement.

On July 17, the Pleasant Grove resident was taking a lunch break, traveling north on a dirt road in a side-by-side all-terrain vehicle, when he saw three large gravel trucks driving from the opposite direction, creating "a tremendous cloud of dust."

The trucks were pulling over, and Caleb's younger brother, Micah Lofgran, attempted to pass from behind in a black Kia Rio, their dad writes.

"Micah had been following in the dust for several miles and assumed the trucks were moving over to let him pass. … Because of the dust cloud, neither brother saw the other coming until they were within 10 ft. of each other and there was no time to swerve or avoid a collision," Randy Lofgran said.

"The brothers collided with both moving between 35 and 45 miles an hour," he added.

The Kia Rio was totaled, but because Micah Lofgran was wearing a seat belt, "he walked away from the crash," but was very concerned about his brother, who was not so lucky, Randy Lofgran said.
