SPANISH FORK — A man was rescued after being trapped up to his waist when a trench collapsed at a construction site in Spanish Fork on Tuesday morning.
Spanish Fork Police Lt. Cory Slaymaker said a crew was digging footings for a commercial building near 810 E. 1950 North at 9:48 a.m. A 25-year-old man entered the trench to check the depth and it collapsed, pinning him up to his waist, Slaymaker said.
Police said the man indicated he was in severe pain and could not free himself. The man was alert and talking to firefighters as they worked to extricate him, Slaymaker said.
The Utah Valley Special Response Team was able to construct a safe trench box and extricate the victim in about two hours, Spanish Fork Fire Chief Eddie Hales said in a press release. The Utah Valley Special Response Team has trench rescue technicians from fire departments across the county.
The man was transported by helicopter to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center and his condition has stabilized, Hales said.
