KANAB — Troopers have identified two of the three people who were killed in a head-on crash Tuesday afternoon in Kane County.

An SUV and car collided about 5:30 p.m. on U.S. 89, about 22 miles north of Kanab, the Utah Department of Transportation said. An eastbound white Honda SUV lost control and entered the westbound travel lane, where it collided head-on with a red Nissan Altima, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cameron Roden.

The driver of the Nissan, Deana L. Steggell, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene and a front-seat passenger, a 16-year-old boy, was taken to the hospital where he later died. Troopers did not release his name. Both Steggell and the 16-year-old are from Willard, Box Elder County.

A 64-year-old woman in the second row of the Honda, Smita Patel from Anaheim, California, was also pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Honda was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and a passenger in the front seat of the Honda was taken to the hospital in unknown condition.

Investigators said the front passenger of the Nissan and the second-row passenger of the Honda were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Roden said weather conditions might have contributed to the collision, but that remains under investigation.

U.S. 89 was closed in the area for several hours after the crash.
