SALT LAKE CITY — Two children were hospitalized with injuries not considered to be life-threatening after being hit by a car near Hawthorne Elementary School on Friday.
Police believe the children were crossing 1700 South in the crosswalk with the help of crossing guards when an eastbound car turned left onto 700 East and hit them in the crosswalk. The driver called 911 around 7:25 a.m. and reported the collision.
The Salt Lake City Fire Department treated the children for injuries, and they were taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
The driver is cooperating with the investigation, police said.
Police are reminding drivers to stay alert, especially in school zones. Drivers should stop and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, always stop for crossing guards, take extra care to look out for children in school zones and limit all potential distractions when using the roadway, police said.
