SPRINGVILLE — A student walking to Springville High School was hit by a pickup truck and seriously injured Tuesday.

The incident happened about 7:45 a.m. near 620 S. Canyon Road, which is close to the high school. Springville Police Chief Lance Haigh said a girl, who is a senior at the school, was crossing the road when she was hit by the pickup.

The girl was taken to Utah Valley Hospital with "serious injuries," he said, while adding that emergency crews were "optimistic she would survive."

There is a crosswalk at the intersection. Whether the girl was in the crosswalk or attempted to cross the road just prior to the intersection was still being investigated, Haigh said. The man driving the pickup was cooperating with police.

"It's just heartbreaking for sure, for the family, that their daughter was injured this way. So our hearts go out to them," Haigh said.

The Nebo School District released a statement about the incident Tuesday afternoon.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragic news of a Springville High student getting hit by a car. Springville High has a crisis team here at the high school that includes counselors to assist any student or faculty member."

The district also acknowledged that other students were in the area at the time of the accident and encouraged parents to "take time to visit with their students during this difficult time. We will continue to have resources available."

The name of girl was not immediately released.
