SALT LAKE CITY — It's hard to believe, but we're already 25% through the college football season, and many teams around the country have wrapped up nonconference play.
Week 3 of action was a roller-coaster ride depending on what your favorite team did this weekend. BYU was riding a high after its win over a then-Top 10 Baylor team; but then in a road game against Oregon, BYU was outmatched and suffered its first loss of the season. Only 29% of people thought the Ducks would get the win, too.
For Utah, it was a slow start on offense that was later propelled by another strong second quarter to lift the Utes over a visiting San Diego State team to wrap up nonconference play. On 2% of people picked the Aztecs to win, so there wasn't much surprise in that game. The average points scored for that game were 34 points.
One of the closer games was two ranked teams in Miami at Texas A&M. Of all picks, 55% had the Hurricanes going into College Station and leaving with a win. But the Aggies had other plans and won 17-9 (that's quite the score), giving people an average of 12 points in that game.
But the biggest "upset" of the week came in the Pacific Northwest where Washington ran roughshod over a ranked Michigan State team. Only 22% of all picks had faith in the Huskies getting a win on their home field, but quarterback Michael Penix Jr. diced up a Spartans secondary to a 39-28 win — the final score was closer than the game played out.
After all that, two Utah fans and one BYU fan came out on top of the leaderboard in Week 3. Utah fan Daniel Lalli won the week with 199 total points, followed by a three-way tie for second place with 188 points. After applying all the tiebreaker rules and such, Utah fan Quinn McClune came out at No. 2 and BYU fan Kevin Barton finished at No. 3.
Utah fans also won the week with a average of 18.2 points per game this week, followed by Utah State fans at 15.9 points and BYU fans at 14.5 points. For the season, the Cougars remain on top with an average of 19.8 points. But Utah fans have made some ground and are now in second place with an average of 18.3 points, followed by Utah State at 17.9 points.
This week's first-, second- and third-place winners will get a $100, $70 and $30 Visa gift card, respectively, courtesy of Goldenwest Credit Union. The overall winners of Pick'em will receive a $500 gift card for first place, a $250 gift card for second place and a $100 gift card for third place.
