HEBER CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will break ground on the new Heber Valley Utah Temple on Saturday, Oct. 8, the church announced Monday.
The First Presidency of the church announced the groundbreaking along with new details about the location of the temple, and an artist's rendering of the temple's exterior.
The three-story temple will be approximately 88,000 square feet, and will be built on a 17.9-acre site located southeast of 1400 E. Center Street in Heber City. Elder Kevin R. Duncan, Temple Department executive director, will preside over the groundbreaking.
Heber City Mayor Heidi Franco congratulated the church on the announcement.
"The city welcomes this significant investment and benefit to Heber Valley, plus acknowledges that many community members are excited for this announcement," Franco said in a statement. "The city recognizes the remarkable humanitarian service provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints within this valley and around the world."
President Russell M. Nelson announced the Heber Valley Temple — along with 13 others — during the church's October 2021 general conference.
Including the Heber Valley Utah Temple, there are 27 temples in Utah that have been announced, are under construction or currently in operation.
In the same statement Monday, the church also announced the location of the Teton River Idaho Temple, which will be the second temple built in Rexburg, Idaho.
