TOOELE — A new resource is coming to Tooele County to help with homelessness.
The old Harris Elementary School in Tooele that closed in 2018 is now being turned into Harris Community Village.
This resource center will offer 24/7 child care, a homeless shelter, domestic violence and substance abuse support groups, and a community kitchen.
The center will also have 66 units of affordable housing available.
"Harris Community Village is not just for residents who are living on campus, it's for anyone in Tooele County who has a need," said Christy Johnson, regional director of Switch Point, the nonprofit organization helping to create the center.
Johnson said the goal of having this is to get those experiencing homelessness back on their feet.
"When people have shelter, they have success," she said.
Johnson said Switch Point bought the building in 2020, but had delays on the project due to COVID-19.
The resource center is expected to open in nine months. Johnson said then it will move onto Phase Two of the project, which is building the 66 units of affordable housing.
