WANSHIP, Summit County — Evacuated residents near a fire in Summit County were able to return home late Sunday after the blaze grew to 40 acres and storms rolled through the area.

The fire in Wanship started as a structure fire that quickly jumped to a grass fire. The fire grew rapidly during a severe thunderstorm warning, but fire crews were able to reach 100% containment on Monday, county officials said.

Areas along the Wasatch Front, including Wanship, were under a severe thunderstorm warning throughout the evening, the National Weather Service said. People from Weber to Utah counties were warned that they could see hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph.

The storm warning followed a day of excessive heat warnings and a record day for Salt Lake City. Temperatures reached an all-time record of 107 degrees around 4 p.m. in the city. According to the weather service, it's only the fourth time it has been that hot in Salt Lake City.

Another wildland fire was impacted by the storms in Salt Lake City near 7200 West and I-80. "The logistics of high winds and firefighting activities have created unique hazards," the Salt Lake City Fire Department said on Twitter.

People were asked to avoid that area.

The storm later moved northeast and away from the fires.
