PROVO — Last year's inaugural boys' 3,200-meter relay race at the 6A state track meet set a record in the event, by consequence.

Farmington hopes their new mark will stand just a little bit longer.

Ethan Peterson ran a blazing fast anchor leg to help the Phoenix to a state record-mark of 7 minutes, 43.28 seconds and win the event by nearly four seconds Thursday on the opening day of the state track meet at BYU.

The mark, which ranks second nationally, helped Farmington keep pace for the team title, trailing Corner Canyon 44-32. Skyridge (28) is third, followed by Layton (26.5) and West Jordan (21.5) in the top five.

"I knew we all had to run 1.56 or faster, but I knew we could all do it," said Peterson, who posted the state record-time with fellow seniors Matthew Neuenschwander, Isaac Halverson and Ryan Bennett. "We just had to execute the best we could.

"It was nice having the competition in Corner Canyon; it didn't feel that fast, but I did it for the boys."

By the final leg, Peterson knew it was now or never as he fought up to the final turn with Corner Canyon's Carter Cutting until pulling away in the final 200 meters.

Of course, it always was for this group.

"It's fun to do it with a team, because we're all graduating," Halverson said. "This was it."

The 4x800 relay also paced the 6A girls team race, where Lone Peak's quartet of Boston Bybee, Rachel Edwards, Addie Meldrum and Katie Bybee posted a 9:25.66, beating out second-place Riverton by nearly six seconds en route to a first place after the first day.

Lone Peak is first with 36 points, six points ahead of Herriman. Syracuse (22), American Fork (20) and Westlake (19) round out the top five.

Another state record nearly fell in the girls long jump, where Amare Harlan improved on her all-time 6A mark with a winning leap of 19 feet, 3 inches. The Fremont junior flew past the field with her third jump of the day, outpacing runner-up Tehana Moo of Syracuse (17-09) and Silverwolves teammate Sarah Taylor, who clinched third with a 16.07.25 on her final attempt after three-straight faults.

"I wanted to PR for the season here (at the state meet), and get close to my overall PR, which I jumped in California," Harlan said. "It was really cool; I'm super happy with my results today.

"It was a good mental game to perform today."

Harlan held the previous 6A record of 19-0, set back on March 24. Her 19-03 ranks third all-time across all classifications, trailing only Amy Menlove of Alta with a leap of 19-04.75 in 2001 and Abby Taylor of Desert Hills' leap of 19-03.5 in 2015.

And Harlan still has another year to break the record, which is a feat by itself, after the junior returned to focus on track and field just over a year ago after wandering to the soccer pitch.

"My goal was to finish first," said Harlan who will also compete in the 100- and 200-meter dash Saturday, "but this gives me something to shoot for next year, to go get that state record. Or maybe in the summer."

Lone Peak leads the girls race with 43 points, followed by Syracuse (30), Herriman (28), American Fork (20) and Westlake (19).
