SOUTH SALT LAKE — Police have arrested a man in the shooting death of another man near a grocery store parking lot after what investigators believe was a robbery.

Damian Stafon Coleman, 27, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail just after midnight Wednesday for investigation of murder and aggravated robbery.

On Monday, officers responded to a report of multiple gunshots in the parking lot of WinCo, 2193 S. Main, at 10:14 p.m. They arrived to find Romeo Charles Stevens, 27, dead in the middle of the road with several gunshot wounds.

Police obtained surveillance video that showed two men chasing Stevens through the parking lot and onto Main Street before he was shot, according to a police booking affidavit. A third man was driving a Chevrolet Impala and followed the group that was chasing Stevens. After the shooting, the two men running after the victim got into the Impala and drove away.

After collecting information about the robbery from witnesses and other sources, detectives determined the Impala was registered to an address in Roy.

"The vehicle was found to have been driven by (Coleman)," who was arrested in Ogden, according to the affidavit.

After his arrest, Coleman admitted that the plan was to rob Stevens, the affidavit alleges.

"(He) admitted to taking part in the aggravated robbery and would likely receive cash as a result of the aggravated robbery. (He) acknowledged picking the two other suspects up from Main Street and fleeing the scene," the affidavit states.

The search for the other two men continued Wednesday.
