SALT LAKE CITY — Two adults and a child were killed, and a fourth person — another child — was critically injured, in three different auto-pedestrian crashes throughout Utah on Tuesday, all occurring within an hour of one another.

In Salt Lake City, police were called about 11:30 a.m. on a report of a hit-and-run crash near 900 East and 1700 South. Libbie Isabel Allan, 23, and her daughter were walking on the sidewalk when a vehicle went over the curb and hit them, said Salt Lake police officer Michael Ruff. The car then drove away.

Allan was taken to a local hospital where she died as a result of her injuries, Ruff stated. The child remained in critical condition Tuesday evening at a local hospital. No other information about the child was immediately available.

The vehicle that hit the mother and daughter continued driving through a front yard and knocked over a fence before fleeing the scene, according to police. Officers searching the area found the vehicle abandoned a short time later near the Forest Dale Golf Course, 2375 S. 900 East. Not far from there, the driver was found hiding in a shed. The arresting officers noted that the man "smelled very strongly of an alcoholic beverage," according to a statement from police.

Jack Archibald, 53, of West Valley City, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of automobile homicide, two counts of DUI, and two counts of leaving the scene of a crash involving death or serious injury.

About the same time as police were responding to the crash in Salt Lake, police in Spanish Fork were called to the area of U.S. 6 and Canyon Creek Parkway where a semitruck making a right turn and a bicycle collided, according to a statement from police. The 49-year-old man riding the bike "ran into the rear tires of the semi and was knocked off of his bike. The bicyclist was then ran over by the semi trailer wheels," police stated.

The man was taken to a local hospital where he died due to his injuries. The driver of the semi was cooperating with the investigation, police stated.

Just prior to those incidents, about 10:45 a.m., Sandy police were called to the area of 9300 South Blossomwood Circle (2200 East) where a 5-year-old girl was hit and killed by a mail truck, according to police. The mail truck remained on the scene. Neither speed nor impairment was believed to be factors, according to police.

Sandy Police Lt. Dean Carriger said with summer and the end of the school year approaching, more children will be outside playing. He said today's incidents were tragic reminders for motorists to always be alert when in residential areas for children who may be in the street and not paying attention to their surroundings.
