NEPHI — A Utah County man accused of randomly shooting at other vehicles on I-15 in Juab County in November has been identified and arrested.
Adam Lloyd Gheen, 19, of Goshen, was charged April 20 in 4th District Court with seven counts of illegal discharge of a firearm, a second-degree felony; possession of a deadly weapon with intent to assault, and five counts of criminal mischief threatening human life, class A misdemeanors.
The charges and accompanying arrest warrant, which were initially sealed, became public Wednesday.
The Utah Highway Patrol confirmed to KSL.com that Gheen was booked into the Juab County Jail on Tuesday and that the charges filed were related to the Nov. 30 incident on I-15.
On that day, starting about 3:15 a.m., an unknown driver shot at least five vehicles on the freeway between Nephi and Scipio over a 30-minute period. According to witness statements, a light-colored SUV would come up from behind random vehicles at a high rate of speed and then shoot at the vehicles while passing, said UHP Sgt. Cameron Roden. Several vehicles were shot multiple times.
The first vehicle shot was hit twice, according to charging documents.
With the second vehicle shot, "the bullet entered the driver's side door just under the window, shattering the window," the charges state.
"One bullet hit the driver's door and the other hit the front fender of the vehicle. This damaged the victim's property while she was driving at freeway speeds and endangered the victim's life," according to the charges.
In the third vehicle, a woman who was driving was hit. "The bullet hit the driver's door just below the window, and entered the vehicle grazing the victim's chest, causing pain," according to the charges.
The fourth vehicle shot was hit twice and also injured a man who was driving.
"The first bullet entered through the driver's side window and hit the victim in the shoulder, passing through and exiting out his back," the charges state. The second shot hit a trailer the victim was pulling."
The fifth vehicle was shot through the rear driver's side door. No one was injured.
All of the drivers whose vehicles were hit were able to pull over safely and did not crash, Roden said. Some drivers initially thought something had been thrown at their vehicles and didn't realize they had been shot at until they stopped and saw the bullet holes, he said.
Details about how investigators were able to locate Gheen were not immediately available.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 3.
