CEDAR CITY — A man trying to flee from police in southern Utah in a stolen vehicle was taken into custody after losing control of the car and rolling, resulting in the death of car owner's dog.

On Wednesday, police received a report that a 2006 Pontiac with the license plate "Glory" that was left running in the parking lot of the Iron County Care & Share facility in Cedar City, was stolen, according to a statement released Friday by the Iron County Sheriff's Office. The Pontiac owner's dog was still in the car and taken along with the vehicle, the sheriff's office stated.

Right after receiving the stolen vehicle report, emergency dispatchers started to get calls of a reckless driver on I-15. A sheriff's deputy spotted the Pontiac moments later, passing him while going 99 mph, according to the statement.

Initially, the vehicle pulled over for the deputy. But after the deputy got out of his patrol car and as he walked toward the vehicle, the driver took off, the sheriff's office stated. The driver continued to flee at a high rate of speed, driving erratically and "with complete disregard for his life and the lives of other motorists," according to the statement.

At the Kanarraville rest area exit off of I-15, the driver lost control of the vehicle and rolled. Both the driver and a dog were ejected. The dog was pronounced dead on scene, the sheriff's office stated.

Damian Peacock, 21, of Enoch, was taken to Dixie Regional Hospital. He is expected to be booked into the Iron County Jail after being released from the hospital.
