SALT LAKE CITY — A man was shot and killed by police in Salt Lake City on Saturday after an armed carjacking, police said.
The incident started around 5:47 p.m. near the 600 South exit of Interstate 15 where the man unsuccessfully attempted one carjacking before succeeding on another try, stealing a car with a gun and fleeing, Salt Lake Police Sgt. Mark Wian said.
Police later spotted the vehicle and followed it to 280 S. Orange Street, Wian said. At some point in the incident, gunfire was exchanged and the man was killed.
No police were injured, and the incident is under investigation. The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave.
"Tonight, two of our officers found themselves facing great danger as they protected our community. I am grateful for their heroic actions," Salt Lake Police Chief Mike Brown said in a statement Saturday night. "Our police officers reacted quickly and professionally to a public safety threat. Their actions demonstrated great courage and likely prevented any further injuries or violence in our community."
