MOAB – Former Moab Police Chief Bret Edge returned to duty on Monday in what city officials are calling a "transitional role."

Edge requested a leave of absence under the Family and Medical Leave Act in September. A statement issued by Moab spokeswoman Lisa Church announced his return Tuesday.

While it has not been confirmed whether his leave was due to scrutiny brought on by the high-profile domestic violence case turned murder of Gabby Petito, who was found dead in Wyoming on Sept. 19, Church said "the city understands that the community has concerns" at this time.

"After the mayor and the acting city manager met with Chief Edge, it was determined that at this time he will serve in the position in a transitional role and the city will be seeking alternative leadership," Church's statement said.

In the meantime, she said, "The police department and city administration will work together on a comprehensive evaluation of the agency and will develop and implement improvements that may be needed."
