SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's COVID-19 case counts remain high entering this week, but new data shows a possible peak for the state's omicron surge.

Utah health officials on Monday reported 21,970 new cases since Friday, as well as 33 additional deaths. Among the weekend total, 10,610 cases were discovered Friday, while 6,850 were reported from Saturday and 4,549 more were reported from Sunday, according to the Utah Department of Health. Of those cases, 3,309 are school-age children.

The state's rolling, seven-day average for new cases is now 9,677 cases per day with the update, which is 1,141 cases per day lower than the last report, issued Friday. The number of cases reported Saturday is also 3,226 cases fewer than the previous Saturday, and Sunday's figure are 1,796 cases fewer than the previous Sunday.

It's unclear if the drop is a result of COVID-19 dissipating or fewer COVID-19 tests being conducted statewide. The health department reported that 39,891 new people got tested over the weekend with a total of 84,502 new tests taken. The health department reported 78,112 tests during the three-day weekend last week, which is about 6,231 more tests taken per day than this week.

Utah's rolling, seven-day "people over people" positivity rate also increased to 44.2%, according to the department. That figure is backdated to Jan. 18 to account for the results of all tests to come in, and it's the highest percentage it has been since March 2020.

The "tests over test" rate is 30.1%, also the highest since the beginning of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, 29 of the 33 people who died from COVID-19 over the weekend were hospitalized because of the coronavirus. The hospitalization status wasn't known for three of the four other remaining deaths reported Monday.

The vaccination status of the 33 people were not disclosed. The 33 people were described as:

  • A Cache County woman between the ages of 65 and 84, who was hospitalized at the time of her death.
  • A Davis County woman, 45-64, hospitalized.
  • An Iron County woman, 65-84, hospitalized.

The health department also report that 738 people in Utah are currently hospitalized as a result of COVID-19. That's a decrease of 27 from a state record of 765 hospitalized on Friday. Of the current hospitalizations, 194 people are patients in intensive care units.

Utah's statewide ICU beds have fallen to 87% capacity but are still above the utilization threshold of 85%. About 37% of ICU beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients, according to health department data.

Intermountain Healthcare tweeted Monday that a little over two-thirds of people currently hospitalized because of COVID-19 in its health care system are not fully vaccinated, and they also make up 82% of its coronavirus ICU cases.

Fully vaccinated people who haven't received a booster shot make up 24% of hospitalizations and 14% of ICU cases, while people who have received a booster account for just 8% of hospitalizations and 4% of ICU cases. Data from the health care system was used in a federal study released last week that found that booster shots reduce the risk of hospitalization during the omicron surge.

There were 16,519 vaccine doses administered throughout the weekend. About 68% of all Utahns have received at least one dose, while nearly 60% are considered fully vaccinated. There have also been 774,475 Utahns who have received a booster dose of the vaccine.

In the past four weeks, people who are not vaccinated are at 2.3 times greater risk of contracting COVID-19, at 5.2 times greater risk of being hospitalized due to COVID-19, and 11.4 times greater risk of dying from COVID-19 than vaccinated people, according to health department data.

Health department testing sites this week

Earlier Monday, the state health department announced an increased number of testing sites for the week.

Given the high number of current cases and limited testing supplies, officials have asked that many Utahns act as if they have COVID-19 if they exhibit any symptoms. That means anyone who has symptoms should isolate at home for five days instead of getting tested.

People who have significant underlying conditions, who are elderly, work with vulnerable populations, or plan to visit someone who is considered vulnerable, are still encouraged to get tested. Anyone who has been sick but wants to confirm a negative test, or anyone traveling to a place that requires a negative test is also encouraged to get tested.

Some of the testing sites require appointments, while others recommend appointments. Appointments can be scheduled online. For more information, visit coronavirus.utah.gov.
