RIVERTON — A man was arrested Friday evening after police say he led officers on a high-speed chase, ran a red light and hit a patrol vehicle.

About 9:20 p.m. police received a call about a suspicious vehicle near 4000 West and 12600 South, Riverton Police Cmdr. Ryan Schosted said. When officers arrived Schosted said they discovered a man in the car with alcohol.

Officers began to approach the man, who then began to reach under the passenger seat of the car and make movements, Schosted said.

The movements "caused alarm to the officers to maybe think that he was going to do something or use weapon," Schosted said. When the officers began to back away, they said the man then took off in the vehicle.

The man drove through a roundabout and then toward the officers onto the sidewalk, according to Schosted.

The officers then began to pursue the man but once "speeds began to get in excess of 100 mph, officers canceled the pursuit just in the interest of public safety," Schosted said.

The man then allegedly ran a red light, sideswiped several vehicles and finally collided with a West Jordan police vehicle coming to assist.

The collision forced the man's vehicle into a field where it became stuck, Schosted said. The man then proceeded to flee on foot, the commander said, but he was arrested by police.

Police later located a large knife under the passenger seat of the man's vehicle, Schosted said. The man was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving and aggravated assault on a police officer.

The man's identity was not released.
