SALT LAKE CITY — A man died Sunday morning after a semitruck hit him while he was trying to secure some debris that flew off his camping trailer.
The incident occurred in the southbound lane of I-15, just before the I-80 East exit.
"This is a tragic case that happened and it's a horrible time of year," Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Ben Fallows said.
UHP received a call that a camper was in the middle of the road and debris was everywhere.
Police said the driver of the camper trailer got out of his truck to secure some items and didn't see the semitruck heading in his direction.
"The camper was destroyed immediately upon impact. Whether he was inside of the camper or not, we are not sure," Fallows said.
Troopers believe the man thought he was doing the right thing by securing the items, but they say it's never a good idea to exit your vehicle in a situation like this, adding that it's best to call for help.
"One thing we are always pushing for people to do is you got to secure your load. And in this case, ultimately, it cost a life," Fallows said.
The man's name and other information about him has not yet been released.
UHP closed the freeway for more than an hour to allow time to clear the crash debris, along with the two trucks.
Troopers said they responded to more calls than expected Sunday due to wet roads and holiday travel.
