SANDY — A man arrested for allegedly shooting his wife Friday night stated he did it in a "fit of rage," police said.

William Matthew Jonides, 57, was booked into Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of murder Saturday.

The shooting happened in a home near 400 East on Montana Drive (11335 South) sometime around 9 p.m., according to Sandy Police Lt. Dean Carriger.

The man called 911 and "advised the dispatcher he had just killed his wife," according to a probable cause statement.

Police arrived on scene, located the man and took him into custody. When police entered the home they discovered a woman in the upstairs bedroom with "obvious signs of trauma," the probable cause statement said. No one else was home at the time of the incident, Carriger said.

Sandy fire personnel at the scene determined the woman was dead, police said. Jonides was transported to the Sandy City Police Department where he was interviewed and stated he killed his wife "in a fit of rage," according to the probable cause statement.

The woman's identity was not released.
