SALT LAKE CITY — Five Utah hospitals are changing ownership and joining with another company that already has a presence in the state.
HCA Healthcare, known in Utah as MountainStar Healthcare, has acquired Steward Health Care's five Utah hospitals, expanding the company's presence in the West, company officials announced Monday.
The Steward Health Care-owned hospitals in Utah include Davis Hospital in Layton, Jordan Valley Medical Center in West Jordan, Jordan Valley Medical Center-West Valley Campus, Mountain Point Medical Center in Lehi and Salt Lake Regional Medical Center in Salt Lake City.
The five additional hospitals will become part of HCA Healthcare's Mountain Division, which includes 11 hospitals throughout Utah, Idaho and Alaska. HCA currently has two hospitals in Idaho.
The acquisition comes after Intermountain Healthcare, the state's largest provider, announced last week that it was merging with Colorado Health nonprofit SCL Health to bring that company's total number of hospitals to 33.
HCA Healthcare CEO Sam Hazen said the state's population increase fueled MountainStar's expansion here.
"Utah is one of the fastest-growing areas in the country, and the state's need for health care continues to increase," Hazen said in a press release. "We believe the addition of these facilities will help us improve health care network options for patients and enable investment in services to meet the increasing demand for health care. We look forward to welcoming them to the HCA Healthcare family."
The Steward Health Care hospitals will join HCA Healthcare's MountainStar hospitals in the state, which include Brigham City Community Hospital, Cache Valley Hospital in North Logan, Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful, Lone Peak Hospital in Draper, Mountain View Hospital-Payson, Ogden Regional Medical Center, St. Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City and Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem.
Steward Health Care is a Dallas-based company that operates 39 hospitals in the United States across Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and until now, Utah.

"We are confident that the combination with HCA Healthcare will enable the achievement of cost savings and further improved quality of care for patients in Utah."
