GRANTSVILLE — A man who was shot and killed by police in Grantsville after allegedly charging at officers with a knife had just been charged with numerous counts of sexually exploiting a minor days earlier and a no-bail warrant had been issued for his arrest.

The deceased man's name was released Wednesday, a week after the fatal confrontation.

Rodney Logan Barton, 42, of Grantsville, was being investigated by the Internet Crimes Against Children task force, according to a Facebook post from the Grantsville Police Department.

About 6:10 p.m. on Aug. 25, police attempted to pull Barton over on state Route 112 but he fled. Following a brief chase, Barton stopped his car, got out and "charged the officers with a knife," police said.

A Grantsville officer fired his weapon, hitting and killing Barton. The State Bureau of Investigation is conducting the investigation into the shooting death.

According to court records, Barton was charged on Aug. 16 with 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony, for allegedly possessing child pornography and a no-bail warrant had been issued for his arrest.
