SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Health reported 1,140 new cases Tuesday and nine deaths.
School-age children accounted for 246 of those cases — 97 in ages 5-10, 50 cases in ages 11-13, and 99 cases ages 14-18.
The new cases were confirmed out of 7,415 people tested, with a 15.78% positive rate. The rolling seven-day average of new cases is now 1,108 per day, and the percent positivity rate those tested stands at 10.5%.
Two of the nine deaths reported Tuesday occurred before August.
Health workers administered 5,747 vaccinations since the previous day's report, brining total vaccinations given in Utah to 3,201,624.
In the last 28 days, people who are unvaccinated have been at five times greater risk of dying from COVID-19, 6.6 times greater risk of being hospitalized due to COVID-19, and 5.9 times greater risk of testing positive for COVID-19 than vaccinated people, according to the state health department.
Of the cases confirmed Tuesday, 283 were breakthrough, meaning the person had been fully vaccinated, state health department data shows. Seventeen additional hospitalizations were among breakthrough patients, and three of the newly confirmed coronavirus fatalities were also people who were fully vaccinated.
Data shows that breakthrough cases have been confirmed in 8,747 people in Utah, 499 of whom have required hospitalization and 42 who have died. The death rate of fully vaccinated coronavirus patients to get COVID-19 stands at 0.00278%.
On Tuesday, 438 people were hospitalized in Utah with COVID-19, 177 of whom were in intensive care units. Referral ICUs that can treat the most serious patients were 84.3% full with coronavirus patients and others. Nonintensive units across the state were 53% full.

- Two Davis County men between the ages of 65 and 84, one was hospitalized when he died, the other was not.
- Two Salt Lake County men, 45-64, one of whom was hospitalized.
- A Salt Lake County woman, 45-64, hospitalized.
- A Uintah County man, older than 85, hospitalized.
- A Utah County man, 65-84, hospitalized.
- A Utah County woman, 65-84, hospitalized.
- A Washington County woman, 25-44, hospitalized.
