MAGNA — A 20-year-old man was arrested Wednesday in connection with a February shooting in Magna that critically injured another man.
Jeremiah Abinadi Cervantes-Bui was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of obstructing justice.
About 1 a.m. on Feb. 7, Cervantes-Bui and several friends entered a party at a house in Magna uninvited and were asked to leave a short time later. Just as the group was getting into two cars to leave, "shots were fired at the home striking the victim. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder and the face, injuring his jaw, teeth and tongue. The injuries required extensive surgery to repair," according to a police booking affidavit.
Cervantes-Bui was identified through social media posts as being one of the uninvited guests who was seen carrying a gun at the party, the affidavit states. Detectives found a Facebook conversation between Cervantes-Bui and others involved, "talking about the shooting and how they were all being blamed for it."
When questioned by police, Cervantes-Bui admitted going to the party, but claimed he left after not being allowed in, and "denied having a gun in his possession at the party or firing the shots at the victim. (He) said he did not know who fired the shots and refused to give any names of persons involved," according to the affidavit.
At that point, Cervantes-Bui was arrested.
