KAYSVILLE — A man who caused a chain-reaction crash that killed two people and injured three others in Kaysville had been driving from Oregon and drinking along the way, according to prosecutors.
By the time Myron Millsap Barlow, 38, of Bluffdale, crashed into the back of another car on I-15 Tuesday night, his blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit, charging documents state.
Barlow was charged Wednesday in 2nd District Court with two counts of automobile homicide, and two counts of DUI with priors, both third-degree felonies; DUI, a class A misdemeanor; and driving with an open container in his car, a class C misdemeanor.
At about 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, a catering truck lost its load on I-15 near Burton Lane. At least two other vehicles slowed or came to a stop to avoid the debris on the highway, according to police.
Barlow, who was driving a Ford F-250, told police "that he had seen traffic slow in front of him" but did not avoid smashing into the back of a Toyota Prius, which in turn was pushed into a Chevy Malibu, the Utah Highway Patrol stated.
A man and woman in the Prius were killed. Another man was flown by medical helicopter to a local hospital in critical condition. Two people in the Malibu were also taken to a local hospital by ambulance in serious conditions, according to UHP.
When UHP troopers questioned Barlow, they noted he smelled of alcohol, there was an open container of alcohol in his vehicle, and he "was having difficulty following instructions on how to fill out forms that were provided to him regarding the crash," charging documents state.
Barlow was given an Intoxilyer test, which registered his blood alcohol at 0.146%, or nearly three times the legal limit, according to charging documents.
He told police he had been drinking late Monday night through early Tuesday morning and then started to drive to Utah from Oregon. Barlow made stops in Mountain Home, Idaho and Tremonton and "consumed alcohol during both of those stops," the charges state.
