GUNNISON — The death of an inmate at the Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison is being investigated as a possible homicide.

An inmate was found unresponsive in his cell Monday morning, according to a short statement from the Utah Department of Corrections.

"Following a medical evaluation, the inmate was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The death is being investigated as a possible homicide," the department stated.

Spokeswoman Kaitlin Felsted declined to release the man's name or age. How he died was not released, either.

Officers from the State Bureau of Investigation are handling the case and gathering evidence to draw a link to a potential suspect.

The Henry wing of the prison where the death occurred will remain on lockdown until further notice, prison officials said.
