BLUFFDALE — A man died after losing control of his motorcycle and striking a concrete barrier on I-15 near 14600 South Friday afternoon, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

The man and a woman were southbound on I-15 on motorcycles. The woman was driving ahead of the man and said she ran over something in the road but didn't know what it was, a news release from UHP says. The woman looked back at the man and saw him lose control of his motorcycle and strike a concrete barrier to the left.

After striking the concrete barrier, the man went down with the bike and skidded 50 yards into the HOV lane, according to the release. The motorcycle continued to skid down the roadway and came to rest several yards south of the driver.

UHP officials said it is currently unknown whether the man struck the debris the woman hit and lost control. Debris near the crash has been collected for investigators to determine whether it was connected to the crash, the release says.

A medical helicopter was called and then canceled. The man was transported to Intermountain Medical Center with major head trauma and was later pronounced deceased, said UHP trooper Mikki Vargas. It is believed that the man was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash but the face shield was up, according to officials.

Utah Department of Transportation reported the crash at 3:25 p.m. and reduced travel to a single lane. At 4:14 p.m., travel on southbound I-15 was opened up to three right lanes, but the left three lanes remained closed.

The estimated clearance is at about 7 p.m., according to UDOT officials.

The identity of the man was not released.

Correction: An earlier version referred to UHP trooper Mikki Vargas as Nikki Vargas. Her first name is Mikki.
