WEST VALLEY CITY — Police have arrested a suspect in the shooting death of Mark Fulilangi, 31, who died after a drive-by shooting early Tuesday at 3300 South and 4300 West.
Police identified Lolo Latu, 26, as a suspect Wednesday afternoon. According to West Valley City police, Latu was booked into Utah County Jail on warrants unrelated to the shooting.
Fulilangi was identified by police as the victim earlier in the day Wednesday.
Police were made aware of the alleged crime at 3:20 a.m. Tuesday when a woman brought Fulilangi into Jordan Valley Medical Center West Valley with two gunshot wounds and then left. Police were able to locate the woman, and she explained that Fulilangi had been shot after someone fired into their vehicle, according to West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku.
The woman told officers that she and Fulilangi were in a car at 3300 South and 4300 West when another car drove by slowly. The vehicle then backed up and stopped, a passenger got out and fired shots into the vehicle, hitting Fulilangi.
The woman then switched places with Fulilangi and drove him to the hospital, Vainuku said.
"Doctors worked for an extensive amount of time trying to save his life, but unfortunately, they just weren't able to save him," she said.
Investigators have submitted the case to the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office to review possible charges.
