KAYSVILLE – Health officials reported an outbreak of COVID-19 at Fairfield Junior High School in Kaysville. A total of 29 students were diagnosed with the disease and were recovering Tuesday night.
Just one more case and the school district would have likely sent everyone home with additional testing needed in order to return.
The students tested positive over the past 14 days and administrators believed the outbreak was centered on students in drama and choir.
School nurses concentrated their testing in those areas Tuesday.
Davis School District spokesman Chris Williams said it's not clear where the cases were transmitted, but students in choir and drama have tried to social distance as much as possible during rehearsals, much like any other extracurricular activity.
While case numbers are improving statewide Williams said this illustrated the need to remain vigilant.
"There's no doubt. We still have to be cautious. We still have COVID-19 out there. Just because numbers are going down doesn't necessarily mean you can't get the virus," he said.
Starting Monday and running through Thursday, a team will be at the school to provide rapid tests for anyone who wants one, with parental permission.
The Davis School District also planned vaccination clinics for kids 12 to 15 years old next week. Those will be offered at junior high schools district-wide and run through June 17.
