FILLMORE — Two people were hospitalized after a semitruck crash in Fillmore on Sunday morning, authorities say.

At approximately 8:30 a.m. Sunday, officials responded to a semitruck crash that trapped two people before the vehicle caught fire, according to the Fillmore, Utah Volunteer Fire Department.

The semitruck drifted into the median while southbound on I-15, Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Andrew Battenfield said.

The fire was extinguished and both victims were extracted and transported to the hospital, the department added.

The driver was flown to Utah Valley Hospital in serious, but not life-threatening condition. The passenger was treated at Fillmore Hospital and released.

The identities of the individuals are currently unknown.

A separate incident occurred just miles south earlier in the day. Another semitruck was northbound on I-15 near Fillmore, carrying several barrels of silicone grease, when it caught on fire around 4:28 a.m. in a construction area. The fire eventually spread to nearby grass and was later extinguished, Battenfield said.

Battenfield added that as of 6:17 p.m., there was a 10-mile backup on I-15 that could take three to four more hours to clear.
