SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Corrections will allow in-person visits at the Utah State Prison again starting in June.

All in-person visiting was suspended last March as part of its COVID-19 protocols. Instead of those visits, prisoners have had the option to make 10 15-minute phone calls per week with loved ones.

"Our incarcerated population have not seen their family in-person for more than a year," said Brian Nielson, executive director for the Utah Department of Corrections, in a news release.

The Department of Corrections plans to roll out a phased approach to the visits, which will include COVID-19 precautions.

Volunteer and religious services will also resume at both the State Prison in Draper and the Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison.
