LOGAN — An inmate at the Cache County Jail briefly escaped Sunday morning during recreation time, officials said, scaling two fences and hiding in a field before being retaken into custody.

Cecil Vijil, 37, escaped for just over an hour, according to a news release from the Cache County Sheriff's Office. Additional charges against him will be reviewed by the Cache County Attorney's Office.

The incident began around 11:17 a.m. when jail was "providing recreation time" to inmates in a designated fenced area, the release says. Vijil scaled the recreation yard fence and the outer perimeter fence, then "ran from the area."

Corrections deputies "attempted to apprehend" Vijil, but he escaped into nearby fields.

Cache County sheriff's deputies and Logan city police officers set up a "large perimeter" in the area, keeping Vijil "in sight," according to the sheriff's office.

"The escapee attempted to evade capture by removing his outer clothing and also by arming himself with a board," the release says, "but due to the rural area that he was in, officers were able to keep him in sight and away from any citizens."

Law enforcement communicated with Vijil from a distance and eventually persuaded him to give up and return to custody.

Vijil was examined by medical staff and returned to the jail, according to the sheriff's office, and the escape is now under investigation.

"The Cache County Sheriff's Office would like to thank the large and coordinated response by local law enforcement agencies," the release says. "Through the cooperative effort of all responding officers, this individual was able to be safely taken back into custody."
