549 more COVID-19 cases, 5 deaths, 31K vaccinations reported Friday in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's number of COVID-19 cases increased by 549 on Friday, with five more deaths and 31,411 vaccinations reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.

There are now an estimated 14,586 active cases of the disease in Utah, according to the health department. The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now at 543, according to the health department. The positive test rate per day for that time period reported with the "people over people" method is now 9.8%. The positive test rate per day seven-day average calculated with the "test over test" method is now 4.6%.

There are 203 COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized in Utah, including 85 in intensive care, state data shows. About 72% of all intensive care unit beds in Utah are occupied, including 74% of ICU beds in the state's 16 referral hospitals. About 55% of non-ICU hospital beds are occupied, according to the health department.

A total of 816,934 vaccines have been administered in the state, up from 785,523 Thursday. A total of 529,871 people have received at least one vaccine dose, while 291,003 have been fully vaccinated, according to health department data. A total of 990,790 vaccines have now been delivered to Utah.

The new numbers indicate a 0.1% increase in positive cases since Thursday. Of the 2,236,642 people tested for COVID-19 in Utah so far, 16.7% have tested positive for the disease or the. The number of total tests conducted since the pandemic started is now at 3,884,886, up 16,934 since Thursday. Of those, 6,601 were tests of people who had not previously been tested for COVID-19, according to the health department.

The five deaths reported Friday include:

  • A Cache County man who was between the ages of 65 and 84 and was a resident of a long-term care facility
  • A Cache County woman who was between the ages of 65 and 84 and was a resident of a long-term care facility
  • A Salt Lake County man who was between the ages of 65 and 84 and was hospitalized when he died
  • A Utah County woman who was between the ages of 65 and 84 and was a resident of a long-term care facility
  • A Weber County woman who was between the ages of 65 and 84 and was a resident of a long-term care facility

One of the deaths reported Friday occurred before Feb. 12 but was still being investigated by state medical examiners, according to the health department.

Friday's totals give Utah 373,868 total confirmed cases, with 14,841 total hospitalizations and 1,970 total deaths from the disease. A total of 357,312 Utah COVID-19 cases are now considered recovered, the health department's data shows.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox provided a COVID-19 update at a Thursday news conference.
