FARMINGTON — A 29-year-old Farmington man was shot and killed early Sunday morning after officials say he crashed into a police vehicle and advanced on officers with a weapon.

The incident began just after 2 a.m. near the intersection of 650 West and State Street, according to a news release from the Utah Department of Public Safety.

Farmington police and Utah Highway Patrol troopers were jointly investigating a stolen vehicle in the area. They were wrapping up the investigation and taking an inventory of the vehicle when a passenger car crashed into a Farmington police car, the release says.

Officials say the driver of that passenger car then emerged from the vehicle with a weapon and advanced toward officers, ignoring verbal commands. A trooper and Farmington police officer both fired at the man.

Officers attempted lifesaving measures and the man was transported to the hospital in critical condition, but he later died of his injuries, the release says. No officers were injured.

Police identified the man on Monday as Robert Joseph Evans, 29, of Farmington.

At this time officials believe the incident had nothing to do with the stolen vehicle.

The shooting was captured on body cameras, officials said, and will be investigated by the Davis County Critical Incident Protocol Team and the Davis County Attorney's Office.

Officials did not specify Sunday what kind of weapon Evans was armed with.
