SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake Magazine Executive Editor Mary Malouf died after being swept out to the Pacific Ocean on Monday, law enforcement officials in California said on Tuesday.
Malouf was visiting the area and had gone to the beach located in Humboldt Bay where she walked out onto the shore with her adult son to watch the waves, Humboldt County (California) Sheriff's Special Services said in a news release. The two then walked out to the end of the North Jetty where a large wave swept over the wall, knocking both Malouf and her son off their feet.
Malouf's son was able to hold onto the jetty rocks, but Malouf had been swept into the ocean, according to the news release.
Deputies received a call on Monday around 12:00 p.m. and the United States Coast Guard, Samoa Peninsula Fire District, and Humboldt Bay Fire began the search for Malouf. The search utilized ground crews, rescue boats and a helicopter.
Around 1:00 p.m. crews were able to locate and recover Malouf from the water, according to the release. Malouf was transported by helicopter to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead, officials said. Malouf was 66 years old.
Malouf was the executive director of Salt Lake Magazine since Aug. 2007. On its website, the magazine hailed her as their "north star, undisputed culinary queen, and one of the brightest and funniest people we will ever know."
