SALT LAKE CITY — A juvenile has been hospitalized in serious condition after he was shot by Salt Lake City police as they responded to a call late Friday.
The incident happened just after 10 p.m., according to Salt Lake Police Sgt. Keith Horrocks. Officers were called to the area of 500 South and Navajo Street on reports of a ”violent psych” incident involving a juvenile male, who was making threats involving a weapon, Horrocks said.
The male fled on foot after officers made contact at the address, Horrocks said; after what he described as a "short foot pursuit," one officer discharged their weapon and struck the male.
Officers then rendered medical aid to the subject until medical personnel arrived. He was transported to a local hospital.
The scene and incident are now under investigation by an outside agency, Horrocks said. He invited potential witnesses or locals with possible camera footage to contact police at 801-799-3000 to assist in the investigation.
Horrocks said there's "no indication" that the juvenile actually had a weapon, but that's under further investigation at this time.
