SALT LAKE CITY — The eyes of the nation were on Corner Canyon as the three-time defending champion kicked off at Bingham in a game televised on ESPN Friday.
The eyes of Utah, meanwhile, saw what a lot of people have been seeing: the Chargers — and the region where they play — are really good during a dominant week for Region 4.
Region 4 teams improved to 18-0, and thanks to Skyridge’s win over 5A’s biggest challenger, the six teams in the league are one away from a sweep, with the first five spots in this week’s KSL.com Top 20+1 high school football rankings.
There’s another challenger, though, this one from the North, where Region 1 has already opened play for a region title and there’s an obvious team to beat.

1. Corner Canyon (3-0)
BYU target Jaxson Dart had the Worldwide Leader in Sports speculating about his future collegiate career with six touchdown passes in the Chargers’ 42-20 win over the Miners, including two to senior Talmage Handley, who caught four passes for 135 yards in the win.
2. American Fork (3-0)
The Cavemen have done nothing to show they aren’t the second-best team in the state, including rolling to a 43-19 win over previously unbeaten West in a game highlighted by Maddux Madsen’s four touchdown passes — including two to Fisher Ingersoll.
3. Skyridge (3-0)
The Falcons took care of business against 5A’s top challenger via a 35-14 home win over Orem, and sophomore McCae Hillstead’s star continues to rise.
4. Lone Peak (3-0)
The Knights have arguably the best defense in the state, holding East scoreless for all but the final three minutes en route to a 32-8 win.
5. Pleasant Grove (3-0)
The Vikings did all of their scoring in the first half in coasting to a 42-0 shutout of Jordan.
6. Davis (3-0)
Spencer Ferguson and Chance Trujillo showed the Darts are the team to beat in Region 1, opening league play with a 44-0 rout at Northridge.
7. Orem (2-1)
The Tigers still have all their goals in front of them after loss to Skyridge, and can get back on track this week against Alta, which has won back-to-back games with a 51-12 rout of Tooele.
8. Brighton (3-0)
The only thing more impressive than Brighton’s 35-14 win over Woods Cross is that the Bengals did it on the road.
9. Sky View (3-0)
Defending champion Bobcats are still the team to beat in 4A after cruising to a 45-0 win over Highland (Idaho).

10. Kearns (3-0)
Cougars enter the top 10 with a 14-7 win over Olympus and cementing themselves as the team to beat in Region 2 before league opener against Taylorsville.
11. Bingham (0-2)
Miners have played a brutal schedule with losses to top-ranked Chargers and No. 3 Skyridge. Can they get back on track Thursday night against Timpview, another winless team?
12. Salem Hills (3-0)
Skyhawks are creeping up the rankings after a 28-7 road win at Juab. But Region 8’s biggest threat on heels.
13. Maple Mountain (2-1)
Tyler Nelson back on track with four touchdowns in a 49-0 shutout of Timpanogos, setting up the Golden Eagles’ rivalry game at Springville.
14. East (1-2)
Leopards have lost back-to-back games, but road games against Orem and Lone Peak will do that to a lot of teams.
15. Snow Canyon (2-0)
Region 9 has a new contender after the Warriors held off defending 3A champion Morgan 24-13.
16. Roy (3-0)
Parker Kingston and Izzy Gordon helped the Royals hold off Fremont 34-27 and make Sept. 18 at Davis a must-see game for Region 1 fans.
17. Westlake (3-0)
The "other" Region 4 team not inside the top-six is quietly undefeated after downing Hunter 25-14. A short trip up the Mountain View Corridor to Herriman could prove a lot about the Thunder.
18. Skyline (3-0)
Speaking of a quiet 3-0, the Eagles are just that after a 34-14 win at Juan Diego.
19. Timpview (0-2)
The Thunderbirds had their rivalry game with Provo canceled for the first time since 1977 due to COVID-19, but Thursday night’s clash with Bingham may be a must-win game for early-season momentum.
20. Ridgeline (2-0)
After a bye week, the Riverhawks are back in the poll after throttling Farmington 45-7 to drop the Phoenix to 1-2.
Plus-1:
Beaver 55, South Summit 10
Treyson Hunter threw for three touchdowns and Beaver’s defense held the Wildcats to one touchdown in claiming small-school supremacy and establishing the reigning champion Beavers as the team to beat in 2A.
