MAGNA — The Unified Police Department is investigating a suspicious death in far western Salt Lake County near the Great Saltair venue as a homicide, police said Monday.

The woman who died was identified on Sunday by Unified Police as Akosita Kaufusi, 42, of Salt Lake City. Investigators discovered Kaufusi had been shot, so they are now treating her death as a homicide, police said Monday.

No other details about Kaufusi's death, or information about a possible suspect, was available as of Monday, police said.

On Saturday, Unified Police Sgt. Melody Cutler said the body of a woman was discovered by a jogger about a half mile east of Saltair near an I-80 frontage road. She had been deceased "at least several days," Cutler said.

Kaufusi was not wearing exercise clothing so likely was not out for a jog in the area at the time of her death, Cutler told KSL TV. A drone search of the surrounding area turned up no personal belongings.

The elements made it difficult, initially, to determine Kaufusi's age and ethnicity.

Anyone with information should call Unified police at 801-743-7000.
