383 more COVID-19 cases, 2 deaths reported in Utah Thursday

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 383 from Wednesday, with two more deaths reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.Health officials now estimate there are 7,643 active cases of the disease in Utah. The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now at 366, according to the health department. Risk equation shows how quickly Utah schools could reach COVID-19 thresholds

Utah has given benchmarks for events happening inside the schools. Three related cases in one class will send that class home for two weeks. Fifteen cases in one school or 10% of the student body – whichever number is lower – will shut down the entire school.Researchers at the University of Texas-Austin created an equation that could provide an idea of how quickly Utah schools could hit those thresholds.KSL calculated what is called the “student introduction risk” for hundreds of schools in the Salt Lake Valley.—Mike Headrick, KSL

State Sen. Deidre Henderson describes ER visits, low oxygen levels during coronavirus recovery

Utah state Sen. Deidre Henderson, running mate to gubernatorial candidate Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox, said in a Twitter thread Wednesday that she has required supplemental oxygen during her battle with COVID-19 this month.Henderson, R-Spanish Fork, also made two emergency room visits last week due to chest pain and shortness of breath, she said.The state senator began to show symptoms of the new coronavirus after two of her immediate family members tested positive, she announced on Aug. 7. Overall unemployment numbers continue to drop in Utah, but new jobless claims edge up

While overall unemployment numbers continue to fall in Utah, the state did see 300 more new claims for jobless benefits filed last week, according to numbers put out by the Utah Department of Workforce Services Thursday.The agency reported that 60,773 continuing claims were filed for the week ending Aug. 22, compared to the 66,984 that were paid out the week before. New unemployment claims rose from 5,321 two weeks ago to 5,628.— Jasen Lee, KSL

Researchers: Eviction crisis looming for renters in America

Unless new protections are put in place, an estimated 30 million to 40 million renters could face eviction in the coming months, according to an analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data.“The United States may be facing the most severe housing crisis in its history,” said the report from the Aspen Institute.If renters can’t afford their housing, the institute warns that many property owners will also not be able to make mortgage payments.“If conditions do not change, 29-43% of renter households could be at risk of eviction by the end of the year,” the report goes on to say.— Ladd Egan, KSL TV

Provo mask mandate veto expected soon

Provo residents have been waiting for final word on whether or not they’ll be required by the city to wear face masks in public.The City Council approved a mask mandate, which Mayor Michelle Kaufusi said she planned to veto.Deputy Mayor Isaac Paxman said they got the mandate on their desks Wednesday morning. They planned to send the veto on the mandate back to the City Council by Thursday and hoped the council would reconsider their decision.“She is trying to be respectful of the City Council, by vetoing it as quickly as possible,” Paxman said.— Garna Mejia, KSL TV

More than 1 million Americans applied for jobless benefits

Just over 1 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week, a sign that the coronavirus outbreak continues to threaten jobs even as the housing market, auto sales and other segments of the economy rebound from a springtime collapse.The Labor Department reported Thursday that the number of people seeking jobless aid last week dropped by 98,000 from 1.1 million the week before.The number of initial claims has exceeded 1 million every week but one since late March. Before the coronavirus pandemic, they never topped 700,000 in a week.More than 14.5 million are collecting traditional jobless benefits — up from 1.7 million a year ago — a sign that many American families are depending on unemployment checks to keep them afloat.—Associated Press
