KEARNS — A 6-year-old girl received minor injuries after a bullet traveled through the wall of the home where she was sleeping, through the headboard of her bed and struck her foot early Friday morning, police said.

The incident happened near 5200 West and Westslope Drive just after midnight, according to Unified Police Lt. Manfred Lassig.

He said someone fired a gun during an argument in the home to the west. The bullet traveled through the wall of the house to the east, through a headboard and a pillow, then hit the girl's foot, leaving a bruise.

Lassig said if the bullet's location had been slightly different it could have killed the girl.

“By the grace of God, we’re lucky that we’re not here investigating the death of a 6-year-old. By inches over, this little gal would have ended up with a bullet in the top of her head, asleep, because somebody thought bringing a gun out in an argument, shooting rounds, was the appropriate thing to do,” Lassig said.

Paramedics checked the girl at the scene but did not take her to a hospital.

Police used a bullhorn to order six people out of the house to the west. No arrests have been made but the investigation is ongoing, Lassig said.
