CHARLESTON, Wasatch County — A head-on crash Thursday afternoon injured three individuals and closed both directions of U.S. 189 near Deer Creek Reservoir, causing heavy traffic delays.
The road reopened and the scene was cleared at 5:40 p.m., but Utah Department of Transportation officials said drivers should expect residual delays in the area into the evening.
About 3:15 p.m., a northbound Mitsubishi Mirage crossed over the center line and collided head-on with a southbound Honda Ridgeline, Utah Highway Patrol officials said. A small trailer the Ridgeline was hauling became disconnected during the crash, officials added.
The two occupants of the Honda suffered “relatively minor injuries” and were transported via ambulance to a hospital, according to UHP officials. The woman driving the Mirage suffered serious injuries and was flown to a hospital via medical helicopter.
The cause of the crash was still under investigation as of Thursday night.
UDOT initially estimated the road could be closed for up to three hours, but by 5 p.m. crews had begun alternating north and southbound traffic in the area.
Heavy delays were reported in the area for several hours, officials said.
