SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s largest city is one step closer to having a new flag.

Salt Lake City officials revealed eight finalist designs for a new city flag on its website Friday. In a joint editorial board meeting with KSL and Deseret News, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said the city did choose to quietly release the designs Friday because of other issues happening in the city at the moment that are more important.

In all, the city received 648 flag designs after officials launched the contest in March, Mendenhall said. The eight finalist designs may still have alterations. People are encouraged to rate the flag and provide element design feedback.

“You don’t just get to pick your favorite one but we ask about the elements of the design, the colors,” she said. “There might be a winning design here that needs the colors inversed or different thing entirely with a symbol adjusted and how the design reflects the city according to the people participating.”

That process will continue through Aug. 21 on the city’s website. A nine-person committee will look at the data from the survey and select a possible design. They are expected to bring that design to the city council for approval in September.

The person who creates the winning design will be awarded $3,000. When the contest was launched, Mendenhall wrote in a statement that she believes “a good flag has the ability to unite the city that works under it.”
