Roughly 20-acre fire burns near gun range in Utah County

A fire about 20 acres in size is in an area west of Utah Lake near Soldier’s Pass Road, Utah County fire officials confirmed. The Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands is conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire. Further information about the fire, including containment and an exact acreage, wasn’t immediately available Friday night. — Lauren Bennett, KSL.com

Canal Fire 76,773 acres, 75% contained

As of Friday night, the lightning-caused Canal Fire was 75% contained and had grown to 76,773 acres, fire officials reported. More than 600 people were assigned to the blaze, which has been burning since June 26 in Millard County. — Lauren Bennett, KSL.com

State and federal fire officials shared updates on containment for the following three fires in Utah:

Powerline Fire in Juab County: 90% contained

Wire Pass Fire in Southern Utah: 95% contained

Volcano Fire in Washington County: 100% contained

Canal Fire grows 6K acres, 45% contained

The Canal Fire, burning north of Oak City in Millard County, grew over 6,000 acres overnight. As of Friday morning, the lightning-caused fire was estimated at 76,647 acres and was 45% contained, according to state and federal fire officials. Firefighters plan to work with air support to stop the blaze from reaching Buck Peak as part of continuing efforts to stop the fire's progress toward Oak Creek Canyon, officials said. A red-flag warning is in effect Friday due to potential thunderstorms that could bring wind gusts of up to 45 mph. Fire officials said there's also potential for lightning, which combined with already dry fuels, could lead to new fires igniting. Fishlake National Forest authorities have closed Oak Creek Canyon Road, Fool Creek Canyon Road and the Leamington Pass area through July 15. The Oak Creek Canyon campground in the Fillmore Ranger District is also closed. Officials said firefighters will avoid Oak City Park on Saturday "to allow residents to hold their Independence Day celebrations without interference." — Yvette Cruz, KSL.com

Knolls Fire remains at 97% containment

Saratoga Springs officials urge residents to stay off Lake Mountain as crews work toward fully containing the 13,000-acre fire. Crews hope to reach 100% containment Friday.
