5 inmates, 1 employee at Weber County Jail test positive for COVID-19

Five inmates and one employee at the Weber County Jail have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, officials said Monday. Those who tested positive have been placed in isolation and officials have started mass testing others who were exposed to the virus. Twelve employees tested negative over the weekend and other areas of the jail have been quarantined due to exposure. Additionally, the jail has provided face masks for inmates and officials are increasing the amount of soap and cleaning supplies provided to inmates, officials said. “We appreciate the combined efforts of our employees, contractors, and community partners in reducing the community spread within our facility,” jail officials said in a statement. Jail officials are also accepting donations of cloth face masks. Anyone who is interested in donating masks can contact the facility at 801-778–6600 to make arrangements to drop them off. — Lauren Bennett, KSL.com

Serious coronavirus-linked condition hit 285 US children

At least 285 U.S. children have developed a serious inflammatory condition linked to the coronavirus and while most recovered, the potential for long-term or permanent damage is unknown, two new studies suggest. The papers, published online Monday in the New England Journal of Medicine, provide the fullest report yet on the condition.The condition is known as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children. It is considered uncommon and deaths are rare; six children died among the 285 in the new studies. — Associated Press

Utah doctor explains reasoning behind new mask requirements

Last week, citing the high number of novel coronavirus cases, Salt Lake and Summit counties issued orders that made it mandatory for citizens to wear masks. Those health orders, and similar ones across the nation, have been somewhat controversial. But as more information and studies come in — Intermountain Healthcare, for example, recently did a study to see if N95 masks limited oxygen intake (they don't) — there's a near consensus among health experts that wearing a mask will help stop the spread of the virus. Judge orders Utah County to identify 2 businesses tied to COVID-19 hot spots

A 4th District Court judge on Monday gave Utah County officials 48 hours to hand over documents revealing the names of two Utah County businesses that health officials had found were in violation of COVID-19 guidelines last month. The ruling was a victory for KSL-TV, which was joined by a coalition of other Utah news organizations in the legal fight to unearth the names of those two Utah County businesses tied to hot spot outbreaks of the novel coronavirus in May. — Katie McKellar, KSL

Governor approves school board plan for reopening Utah public schools this fall

The Utah governor has given his seal of approval to the Utah State Board of Education’s requirements and recommendations for K-12 schools to reopen this fall — a document that addresses a host of issues ranging from social distancing to cafeteria practices. All public schools are required to create and share their plan on their respective websites by Aug. 1 so families have time to plan for the coming school year. “We appreciate the thought, care and work that went into these requirements and recommendations,” Gov. Gary Herbert said in a Monday news release. “We appreciate that so many health care professionals, teachers, administrators, parents, classified workers and others devoted their energies into creating these guidelines to help keep our children and our school employees safe and healthy this coming academic year.” — Sahalie Donaldson, KSL

Herriman football staff member tests positive for COVID-19

A member of the Herriman High School football staff has tested positive for COVID-19, the Jordan School District announced Monday. The district made the announcement after receiving confirmation from the Salt Lake County Health Department. Upon investigating the case, the district has begun to quarantine all practice and conditioning staff, as well as players, until July 7. The positive case is the first known case of the novel coronavirus in Utah high school football. — Sean Walker, KSL.com

Duchesne County School District to hold in-person classes this fall

The Duchesne County School District announced on Monday its plans to hold in-person classes for the fall semester. Additionally, two other options will be offered to families for instruction: online learning and a combination of face-to-face and online classes. Face coverings will be mandatory on school buses and exceptions must be approved by the transportation personnel. Face coverings are encouraged but not required in classrooms. Ogden Marathon canceled due to COVID-19 concerns; 20th anniversary postponed a year

Like many similar races, the Ogden Marathon is taking a break during the coronavirus pandemic. The race, through its founding partner The GOAL Foundation, announced Monday that the 2020 marathon has been canceled. The next marathon will start May 15, 2021, when the organization will celebrate be the 20th anniversary of the race. “We acknowledge and empathize greatly with the difficulty in having to make this decision, but are committed to the health and safety of our community and everyone involved with the marathon,” GOAL Foundation executive director Eric Bauman said in a statement. “We appreciate your understanding and support in this difficult time.” Previous races have brought more than 20,000 people to Ogden for the marathon, which made canceling this year’s event prudent in light of the current pandemic, the organization added. “We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the athletes, volunteers, community partners, and sponsors who for the last 19 years, have made the Ogden Marathon one of the best marathons in the entire country,” Ogden City Mayor Mike Caldwell said. “We look forward to being able to host the Ogden Marathon and celebrate as a community when it is safe to do so.” — Sean Walker, KSL.com

Utah sees 564 new cases of COVID-19, 1 new death

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 564 from Sunday, with one new reported death, according to the Utah Department of Health. The health department estimates there are now 9,291 active cases of COVID-19 in Utah. There were 21 more people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Utah since Sunday, and 193 people are currently hospitalized with the disease in the state. About 62% of Utah's intensive care unit, or ICU, hospital beds are occupied, according to state data. About 48% of Utah's non-ICU beds are occupied as of Monday. Broadway shutdown due to virus extended again until January

The shutdown on Broadway has been extended again — until at least early January. Although an exact date for performances to resume has yet to be determined, Broadway producers are now offering refunds and exchanges for tickets purchased for shows through Jan. 3. —Associated Press

Gilead's $2,340 price for coronavirus drug draws criticism

The maker of a drug shown to shorten recovery time for severely ill COVID-19 patients says it will charge $2,340 for a typical treatment course for people covered by government health programs in the United States and other developed countries. Gilead Sciences announced the price Monday for remdesivir, and said the price would be $3,120 for patients with private insurance. The amount that patients pay out of pocket depends on insurance, income and other factors. — Associated Press

Sundance to expand footprint nationwide in adjustment to COVID

The Sundance Film Festival, held annually at altitude in the snowy reaches of a Utah ski town, is expanding beyond the mountains. Sundance, the premier independent film festival, isn't giving up its home in Park City. But on Monday, organizers said selections from next year's edition will also play in at least 20 other cities, radically enlarging Sundance's scope and connecting it more deeply with local communities. — Associated Press

Gephardt: $1.4 billion in stimulus payments went to deceased Americans

Dead people don’t need stimulus money — but many got it. The KSL Investigators first reported the story about two months ago after hearing from about a dozen Utahns who said their deceased loved ones had received a $1,200 economic impact payment from the federal government. The IRS has declined to answer how much was being sent to deceased people when asked by KSL TV, but they had to answer when asked by the government accountability office. “As of April 30, almost 1.1 million payments totaling nearly $1.4 billion had gone to decedents,” the report reads. — Matt Gephardt and Cindy St. Clair, KSL TV

Summer break, COVID-19 shutdown could wipe out school year gains

When the front door opened, a big smile welcomed the two educators from Bonneville Elementary on the porch making surprise house calls. Home visits is just one way that Ogden schools are trying to use their “summer bridge” program to fill the gap created by the pandemic. Educators have long battled the “summer slide” as a time when students lose academic gains. Summer may decide fate of leading shots in vaccine race

People on six continents already are getting jabs in the arm as the race for a COVID-19 vaccine enters a defining summer, with even bigger studies poised to prove if any shot really works — and maybe offer a reality check. Already British and Chinese researchers are chasing the coronavirus beyond their borders, testing potential vaccines in Brazil and the United Arab Emirates because there are too few new infections at home to get clear answers. The U.S. is set to open the largest trials — 30,000 people to test a government-created shot starting in July, followed about a month later with another 30,000 expected to test a British one. — Associated Press
