CENTERVILLE — One of two people who was pulled from a crashed plane near Legacy Parkway in Centerville on Thursday has died.

The crash occurred west of the highway near 650 W. Glovers Lane, according to the Davis County Sheriff's Office. Centerville Police Lt. Zan Robison said witnesses rescued two people, who were transported to the hospital in critical condition.

One of the passengers later died from their injuries, Centerville police said Thursday night. The deceased was identified as the owner of the plane, Andre Kostrzewa, 72, of Salt Lake City. His 47-year-old male passenger remained hospitalized in critical condition, police said later in the evening on Facebook.

The rescuers were treated for minor burns at the scene, Robison said.

The crash sparked a grass fire that totaled nearly 10 acres before being contained, police said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Centerville police investigated the crash, and have referred the investigation to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which usually investigates plane crashes. The NTSB was not available immediately to respond to the scene, police said.

The experimental plane was seen at Bountiful at 12:10 p.m., and was supposed to land in Ogden at 12:48 p.m., according to flight-tracking website Flight Aware. Witnesses say they saw the plane slowly lose elevation before its rough landing.
