WEST VALLEY CITY — A driver in West Valley City led police on a chase early Sunday morning and ultimately disappeared after ditching a stolen Land Rover in an apartment complex.

Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the Land Rover near 3500 South and 2200 West, according to West Valley City Police Sgt. Tyler Longman. The Land Rover fled the stop and officers followed it, but terminated their pursuit when the man began driving "erratically."

Officer attempted to spike the vehicle's tires near a 7-Eleven at 3500 South and Redwood Road. The driver drove around the spikes and into the 7-Eleven's parking lot, causing officers to have to jump out of the way.

The driver also drove through two chain-link fences in a Mountainland Kitchen & Bath parking lot at some point, Longman said.

A civilian later called police to say the Land Rover had hit his vehicle and that he was pursuing it. The civilian followed the man to an apartment complex near 300 East and 3300 South, where the man left the Land Rover and continued on foot. The civilian pursued the man but lost him, Longman said.

Police dogs were also unsuccessful in locating the man.
