546 new cases marks new single-day high total

The Utah Department of Health is reporting 546 new cases of COVID-19 and one death from the disease Saturday. The numbers come one day after Utah reported more than 400 new cases, what was then a new daily high, amid a recent spike that led state leaders to slow down a proposed downgrade in risk levels and keep most of Utah at the yellow, low-risk phase. The deaths bring Utah's total to 121 since the coronavirus pandemic began. About 6,939 Utahns are estimated to have recovered from COVID-19. — Graham Dudley, KSL.com

Board OKs $2M for ‘new normal’ school supplies

With an eye on safely restarting K-12 schools this fall, the Utah State Board of Education agreed Thursday to set aside more than $2 million of federal CARES funding to purchase equipment and supplies such as thermometers, hand sanitizer and child-sized disposable masks. The board also directed State Superintendent of Public Instruction Sydnee Dickson and board staff to work with state and local health authorities to define minimum statewide health and safety requirements for schools. The board also directed Dickson and staff to create guidelines for schools on each of Utah Leads Together’s color-coded guidelines. — Marjorie Cortez, KSL

ICYMI: Catch up on coronavirus developments from yesterday

Utah's number of new COVID-19 cases increased by 439 Friday — eclipsing the state's previous highest single-day new case total by nearly 100.

Utah will stay at the yellow, low-risk level for COVID-19, Gov. Gary Herbert announced Friday.

The U.S. unemployment rate fell to 13.3% in May from 14.7%, and 2.5 million jobs were added — a surprisingly positive reading in the midst of a recession that has paralyzed the economy in the wake of the viral pandemic.
